Tax on online purchases that come from abroad, to protect the national industry. The intention was good, but…
In Brazil, the “blouse fee” is the popular name given to 20% tax on purchases low-value international products, made online.
These are mainly orders placed on platforms such as Shein, Shopee or AliExpress, and which do not cost more than 50 dollars, or 43 euros.
The expression gained popularity because many of these products are pieces of clothing cheap, like blouses.
The Brazilian Government’s priority was to protect the national industry; and pleased both the Brazilian productive sector and investors.
The intention was good, but the consumers don’t like it.
An Atlas/Bloomberg survey reveals that 62% of Brazilians classify the “blouse tax” as the main mistake of the Government in this economic context.
“Everyone buys products online. It’s a facility that exists. And it was really very cheap to buy these Chinese products without tax”, comments analyst Pedro Venceslau, at .
This survey may worry Fernando Haddad, who a few days ago stopped being Minister of Finance (Finance) to try to become president of the São Paulo City Council.
