A 50-year-old woman from the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has made a remarkable recovery after being clinically declared brain deadin an event that his family calls a “miracle”.
Vineeta Shukla, employee of the tribunal of Pilibhit, suddenly fainted on February 22, while carrying out household chores. She was initially taken to a local health center before being transferred to a hospital in Bareilly, where her condition deteriorated rapidly.
According to doctors, showed no signs of brain activity: His brainstem reflexes were absent, his pupils were dilated, and his Glasgow Coma Scale score had dropped to three, the lowest possible level, indicating profound unconsciousness. With no hope of recovery, she was sent home.
Her husband, Kuldeep Kumar Shukla, began preparing for the funeral as his wife was transported by ambulance on February 24. However, while traveling on the Bareilly-Haridwar highway, the vehicle hit a large holecausing a sudden and violent jolt.
What happened next shocked everyone present. At Neurocity Hospital in Pilibhit, doctors carried out a new assessment and started intensive treatment. Neurosurgeon Rakesh Singh reviewed his medical history and noted that previous assessments indicated severe neurological impairment, including possible brain death. However, additional examinations at the new hospital revealed the presence of high concentrations of neurotoxins in his body, which may have contributed to his condition.
After targeted treatment, Vineeta’s health began to improve significantly. Within a few days, he regained consciousness and was able to speak to his family. It was discharged at the beginning of this week and already returned home.
Medical experts warn that these recoveries are extremely rare and highlight the importance of an accurate diagnosis before declaring brain death.
