A US-Israeli war against Iran is unlikely to lead to regime change in the Islamic Republic, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Friday. This was reported by the AFP agency, writes TASR.
“Is regime change really the goal?” Merz asked at a forum organized by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ). “If that is the goal, I don’t think it will succeed,” he said. Pointing to Afghanistan, he noted that conflicts in the past have mostly gone badly. “I have serious doubts whether there is a strategy and whether this strategy is successfully implemented.” added the chancellor.
Germany rejects US President Donald Trump’s criticism of member states NATO for not joining the attacks on Iran and stresses that it is not their war. However, Merz expressed his belief on Friday that Trump accepted his position. The last time he spoke to him on the phone was last Sunday.
The chancellor also said on Friday that Germany could help ensure military protection in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which the war almost completely blocked, but only in case of an armistice. “It requires an international mandate, the approval of the German parliament and before that a government decision. And we are far from that,” he stated.
