25-year-old Noelia Castillo, who had been waiting for her for more than 600 days, died on Thursday afternoon, March 26, after being admitted to an assisted living facility in , where she was being treated.
As reported by El Pais, even at the last moment, the ultra-conservative organization “Christian Lawyers” tried to prevent euthanasia on behalf of her father, but failed.
“Noelia’s euthanasia has already taken place. We ask for prayers for her soul and her family. May he rest in peace,” the organization said in its message.
Battle with her family
25-year-old Noelia suffered from constant pain and intense mental anguish, as found by an independent panel of experts who assessed her case and which oversees the implementation of euthanasia legislation.
However, the young lady had to wait 601 days before her right to euthanasia was exercised.
Of course, the 25-year-old did not only have to “fight” with the government agencies, but also with her own family, as she had a big legal dispute with her father, who had aimed to block the process.
Represented by “Christian Lawyers”, he tried to block the process, but five judicial bodies rejected his request. In fact, a few hours before Noelia’s euthanasia, her father’s last appeal was also rejected.
“I want to die beautiful”
The 25-year-old’s euthanasia was scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
She spent the last night with her mother, while other family members were with her in the last hours. However, she had expressed a desire to be alone at the time of the procedure.
“I want to die beautiful, I will wear the most beautiful dress I have and I will paint,” she had said. She asked to have the procedure done in her room, which she considered the safest place. “I told my family they can come to see me off, but not when I’m being injected. I don’t want anyone inside, I don’t want to be seen closing my eyes,” he said.
