“Dogs do not make people’s lives more expensive at all”, declared the governor of Goiás when refuting a statement by Lula
The governor of Goiás, (PSD), published a video on Friday (27th March 2026) to counter the president’s statement (PT) on Thursday (26th March) about Brazilians spending a lot on pets, relating this factor to greater indebtedness among the population.
Caiado declared that what makes people’s lives more expensive are the “corrupt”not the dogs.
“Lula, now you want to tell me that people’s level of debt is due to the fact that they keep a dog at home? Is that it, Lula? Lula, it’s not the dogs, no. It’s exactly the corrupt ones. The dogs don’t make people’s lives more expensive at all. What makes them more expensive is the corruption that you’ve governed for almost 20 years”said the governor.

“Anyone who has a puppy has to take it to the dentist to take care of its mouth, no one accepts giving the dog more leftover food. The puppies want to sleep with us. It has to be clean, bathed once a week, taken to the vet. And all this adds up”stated Lula.
The PT member also made a gaffe during his speech: he said that the Chinese should not have a problem with spending on dogs. In the Asian country, some regions have the (increasingly rare) custom of eating dog meat.
