Trump says there has already been a “regime change” in Iran and that his new leadership is “very reasonable”
The president of the United States, Donald Trump, takes for granted that, in fact, a “regime change” has already occurred in Iran, after the assassination, on the first day of Israeli and American bombings, of a good part of the Iranian leadership, including the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. Thus, he affirms that the new Iranian leadership, with which he claims to be maintaining contacts “directly and indirectly” is “very reasonable.” In theory, Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the slain supreme leader, is in charge, but it is known that he was injured in the attack in which his father was killed and has not appeared in public since.
In statements at Air Force 1 this morning, Trump spoke of “direct and indirect” contacts. Pakistan is acting as a mediator between Washington and Tehran and appears to be hosting a bilateral meeting this week, but there is no word of direct negotiations so far. Furthermore, Trump assures that the new Iranian leaders have so far been “very reasonable” in their dialogue with the United States. However, the few public statements coming from Tehran are rather challenging. This weekend, the speaker of parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, assured that his country will not be humiliated and that, if any American soldier sets foot on its soil, they will be waiting for him.
“We have emissaries, but we also deal with them directly,” Trump said, adding that negotiations with Tehran are going “extremely well” and that he is “pretty confident” that he will reach an agreement because, in fact, he believes that a regime change has already occurred. “The regime that was really evil was the first to disappear,” while “the second was named and is no longer there” to the extent that “they are all dead, except for one who may still be alive.” Perhaps he was referring to the death of Ali Khamenei, first of all, to the head of security, Ali Larijaní, also assassinated days later, and to Mojtaba Khamenei, the current leader. Trump has considered that there is now a “third group of people” who seem to be “much more reasonable.” As for the agreement, he says he believes it will be achieved, “but it is also possible that it will not.”
