China questions Japan’s sincerity in dialogue over Taiwan

Chinese government refuses to calm crisis started by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi until Japanese take “concrete actions”

Spokesperson Mao Ning said this Monday (March 30, 2026) that the Chinese government has no interest in discussing issues related to Taiwan with Japan. The speech came after a question about the Poder360 with the Japanese ambassador to Brazil, Yasushi Noguchi, who declared that the Japanese are willing to resolve diplomatic tensions with Beijing.

At the time, Noguchi stated that his country supports dialogue between China and the island of Taiwan and wants to build a beneficial relationship. The Chinese spokesperson responded that the Japanese government must demonstrate its sincerity by taking concrete actions, such as one from the Japanese Prime Minister, (Liberal Democratic Party, right), that she would support the Taiwanese government in a military dispute against China.

“The Taiwan issue is China’s internal matter, and the one-China principle is the political foundation of Sino-Japanese relations. Dialogue should be based on mutual respect and the pursuit of consensus; it is unacceptable to demand dialogue while harming the other party’s fundamental interests.”declared the spokeswoman.

Takaichi’s statement was made in November last year. Since then, the relationship between China and Japan has entered a crisis spiral. In addition to the talk about Taiwan, China criticizes the current Japanese government’s ambitions to restructure its Armed Forces, which goes against a series of agreements signed after the Second World War.

The Japanese Prime Minister never recanted. In January, he even said that he would not attack China in the event of a Chinese intervention in Taiwan, but that he would organize military action with the United States to protect Japanese and North American citizens living on the island.

The explanation was not enough for the Chinese government, which has already adopted economic retaliation against Japan. In addition to canceling the showing of Japanese films in the country, China banned the export of rare earths to Japanese companies that can produce items for military use. The ban could even affect automobile companies like Honda and Toyota.
