Mercadona confirms: this is the origin of the onions sold in its stores

The onions sold on Mercadona come from a Spanish family company that, in 2024, achieved a turnover of 18.4 million euros, consolidating its role as one of the main suppliers of this vegetable to the Valencian chain. The company is called Cebollas Javaloyes and has been supplying the supermarket since 2012, maintaining a commercial relationship that has helped drive its expansion in recent years.

According to the Spanish newspaper, with the arrival of spring, the season most associated with onions also begins, although the company has been adapting production to ensure supply throughout the year. This need was decisive for the growth of the business, in a strategy designed to meet the demands of the main customer.

Cebollas Javaloyes sought new growing areas in the interior of Spain, where thermal contrasts favor the development of this crop. With this bet, it managed to guarantee production of entirely Spanish origin to supply Mercadona stores spread across the country.

Mercadona continues to be the main customer

According to the accounts deposited in the Commercial Registry, and cited by the same source, the company had revenues of 18.4 million euros in 2024, which represented a growth of 7% compared to the previous year. In the same period, it recorded profits of 217 thousand euros, reflecting a positive evolution of the activity.

Although Mercadona’s weight in the business continues to be high, dependence on the chain has been decreasing. In 2024, the supermarket represented 63% of the company’s turnover, a still significant share, but well below the 81.3% recorded in 2019.

This reduction shows that the producer has diversified its customer portfolio in recent years. The family company also works with other large food distributors in Spain, strengthening its position in the horticultural sector.

Expansion supported in production and logistics

In addition to Mercadona, Cebollas Javaloyes supplies chains such as Lidl, Alcampo, El Corte Inglés, Día, Aldi and Spar. This diversification allowed the company to reduce risks and consolidate its activity in an increasingly competitive market.

One of the company’s distinctive elements is the existence of its own mobile factory. This system was created to harvest, wash, cut leaves and prepare tender onion bundles directly in the field, speeding up the process and shortening the time between production and distribution.

This solution saves time and costs, while facilitating the delivery of the product ready to reach supermarkets. The focus on operational efficiency has become one of the company’s hallmarks in the sector.

More workers and new projects linked to the field

In 2024, the company had an average of 222 workers, most of them agricultural day laborers linked to field tasks. Business growth also made it possible to move forward with new business projects associated with the primary sector.

Among them are Naturfresh Javaloyes, dedicated to the cultivation of aromatic herbs, and Cebollas Ecológicas Javaloyes, focused on sustainable and chemical-free production. These initiatives show how the company has sought to expand its activity beyond conventional onions.

In a period in which the origin of food products is becoming increasingly important to consumers, the case of Mercadona onions reveals how a regional supplier managed to grow, become more professional and transform a long-lasting commercial relationship into a multimillion-dollar business.
