The governor of Goiás, , will announce this Monday (30) that he will be the pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic this year. At 76 years old, it is the second time he has sought the position, having come in tenth place in the first election after redemocratization, in 1989.
The announcement ends a beginning of crisis in the acronym, historically averse to ruptures. The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, had resumed a more intense campaign for the postulation since last week, when the chief executive of Paraná, ., withdrew from the dispute.
The Paraná native was the favorite for the campaign. In January, the president of the PSD had brought together the three governors in an agreement according to which two would give up the candidacy in the name of the one who was better placed in the polls.
Ratinho Jr. was in this position, although at a level not far above the others. But the PSD understood that it was better able to embody the idea of a center, seeking to break the current polarization between (PT) and Flávio Bolsonaro (PL).
The senator from Rio was anointed the right-wing candidate by his father, Jair, the former president now under house arrest, convicted of an attempted coup. He saw his candidacy consolidate in the anti-Lula camp, and now Caiado will compete for votes in the same field: in recent years, the Goiás native has moved closer to Bolsonarism.
