The command of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that two members of the UN mission were killed in an explosion in the south of the country on Monday. This is the second fatal incident in the last 24 hours, AFP reported.
Monday’s incident took place near the location of Bani Hajján, where an explosion of unknown origin destroyed the UN car. A third UNIFIL member who was in the car was seriously injured. The fourth crew member was slightly injured. UNIFIL began investigating the circumstances of the incident, AFP added.
UNIFIL in its statement called on all actors in the conflict in Lebanon to abide by their obligations under international law and ensure the safety of UN personnel and assets at all times including avoiding any action that could endanger peacekeepers.
The UN mission warned that deliberate attacks on peacekeepers are a serious violation of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council resolutions no. 1701 and may constitute war crimes.
