Attacks by the Women’s Commission are ‘distraction’, says Erika – 03/31/2026 – Politics

The federal deputy (-SP) stated that the debate over her election to the presidency of the Chamber’s Commission for the Defense of Women’s Rights was “contaminated by a hateful speech” that served as a distraction from problems faced by Brazilian women.

She stated that hate messages spread against her on social media are in part driven by campaigns led by public agents.

In an interview with , da , this Monday (30), the parliamentarian said that she will not let the wave of attacks influence the commission’s work and that her priority will be to combat the “epidemic of violence against women”, citing the increase in femicides, rape cases and speeches by misogynistic groups.

“Brazilian women expect strong responses from institutions,” she stated. “We, as a house of laws, cannot waste time debating hate.”

The deputy also demanded compliance with the decision of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) that equated LGBTphobia with the crime of racism. She said “overtly transphobic” cases are dismissed or thrown out of court. “We won the right and now we need to fight for the right to exercise the right,” he said.

“It was important that the Federal Supreme Court did not allow some judicial bodies to mock its decision,” he stated.

Hilton was elected president of the Chamber’s Committee for the Defense of Women’s Rights on March 11, with 11 votes in favor in the second round, after the first attempt was blocked by a majority of blank votes. She is the first trans woman to chair a committee in the House.

The choice generated a reaction from Bolsonaro parliamentarians and also exposed divisions within the left itself, between those who recognize it as the legitimate representative of women and sectors of feminism that contest this position based on biological sex. The deputy replaced Célia Xakriabá (PSOL-MG) in the post.

The deputy said that the senator and pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic (PL-RJ) “does not have the speech of someone who wants to preside over a nation and uphold the rights of the Brazilian people.” “No one who wants to defend Brazil and Brazilians goes to the USA to offer their country,” he stated.

Hilton also said that PSOL’s decision not to form a federation with the PT was “profoundly wrong” not only for the party, but for the left-wing camp. According to the deputy, she and the minister (General Secretariat) wanted to stay in the party so as not to harm it and avoid the risk of not reaching the barrier clause.

The party is split because of its leadership’s decision to refuse the formation of a federation with the PT. The Solidarity Revolution group, led by Boulos and Hilton, discussed the possibility of migrating to President Lula’s party.

In addition to the minister and the deputy, the movement includes names such as federal deputy Luciene Cavalcanti, federal deputy Henrique Vieira, pre-candidate for the Chamber Natalia Boulos, state deputies Carlos Giannazi (SP), Ediane Maria (SP), Renata Souza (RJ), Yuri Moura (RJ), Dani Monteiro (RJ), Bella Gonçalves (MG) and councilors such as Rick Azevedo.
