Brazil has 1,968 fires in March, an annual drop of 16.5%

Roraima was the most affected state; Next are Bahia, Mato Grosso and Santa Catarina

Brazil registered 1,968 fires in March 2026. There was a 16.5% drop compared to the same month in 2025, when the country had 2,357 fires. The data are from the (National Institute for Space Research) system.

Roraima was the most affected state, with 602 fires. Next are Bahia (298), Mato Grosso (164) and Santa Catarina (119).

Espírito Santo, with 8 records, Rondônia, with 5, Rio de Janeiro, with 2, and the Federal District, with 1, appear at the end of the ranking of States that recorded fire outbreaks in March. Acre and Amapá did not record any occurrence of this type in the 3rd month of 2026.

BIOMES

All Brazilian biomes recorded fires. The Amazon concentrates the largest share, with 874.

In 2026, Brazil had 8,406 fires, an increase of 15% compared to the first 3 months of last year, when the country recorded 7,313 fire incidents.

Brazil ended 2025 with around 50% in the number of fire outbreaks compared to 2024. According to Ane Alencar, director of Sciences at the (Amazon Environmental Research Institute) and coordinator of Fogo, “there is a reduction in fires in the years following years that burn a lot”.

She said that “that person who lost a lot of things, because the fire got out of control, will be more afraid of burning the following year”.

The . The National Integrated Fire Management Policy came into force in July 2024, establishing coordinated fire prevention, preparation and control actions to be adopted by the federal government, states and municipalities.
