Israel kills senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon

Israel killed a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, the Army reported this Wednesday (1st). Israeli naval troops “carried out an attack in Beirut” and “eliminated” Hajj Yusuf Ismail Hashem, commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front unit, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The Southern Front unit is “responsible for terrorist activities against Israeli civilians” and “combat operations against IDF soldiers” in southern Lebanon, the Israeli army said.

Hashem took office after his predecessor, Ali Karaki, was killed in , along with the former Hezbollah leader, – in an intense campaign that weakened the group’s military leadership.

Israel intensified attacks on the Lebanese capital overnight, where at least nine people were killed and 29 injured, according to Lebanon’s Public Ministry of Health.

Israeli forces have increased bombings in Lebanon since March 2 after the Iranian-backed militant group fired projectiles into Israel in response to a joint US and Israeli military attack on Iran.
