The Pechão Folar Festival has established itself, over 25 editions, as one of the main initiatives to promote traditional Algarve cuisine, and is currently recognized as the oldest event dedicated to folar in the region.
Held in that parish in the municipality of Olhão, the event has consolidated its role in promoting local identity, community conviviality and the preservation of ancestral knowledge linked to Easter sweets.

Over the years, it has brought together producers, artisans and visitors in an environment of sharing between generations, reflecting the vitality of local associations and the event’s ability to adapt to contemporary dynamics, without losing the authenticity that characterizes it.
25th anniversary edition reinforces the event’s identity
The 25th anniversary commemorative edition, held on March 28th and 29th, took on a symbolic character, maintaining the elements that define the festival.
Among the highlights were the tasting of traditional folares, the presence of “folareiros” and “folareiras”, the promotion of regional products and the folares competition, which encourages the quality and preservation of recipes passed down between generations.

The pedagogical component was also present, with a cooking show dedicated to the making of folar, guided by a local chef, providing the public with direct contact with regional sweets techniques.
Culture and tradition in dialogue
The program also included a strong cultural and festive component, with the participation of artists from various generations. The presence of dance groups, folkloric groups and initiatives such as the Accordion Festival contributed to valuing local musical culture and promoting intergenerational dialogue.

One of the most anticipated moments was the making of the “giant folar”, created by a pastry chef of recognized merit, with national and international recognition. In this edition, the folar reached around 70 meters, reinforcing the emblematic nature of the event.
National projection of the event
The commemorative edition was also marked by the festival’s projection in the national media, highlighting the growing recognition of the initiative beyond the regional context.

More than a gastronomic event, the Pechão Folar Festival constitutes “a true heritage device, contributing to the safeguarding of culinary practices in the region”.
Over these 25 editions, the event has also become a “golden triangle” and a meeting point between tradition, culture and heritage.
