The rise in food prices continues to mark the daily lives of consumers in Portugal, at a time when several essential products continue to become more expensive and increasingly weigh on family budgets.

The tomato has now once again stood out in the negative. According to , the price of this product exceeded 3 euros per kilo for the first time in 2026, after having increased by 64 cents in one week, reaching 3.24 euros.

This worsening represents an increase of around 24% compared to the previous week. Since January 7th, tomatoes have already increased by R$ 1.05 per kilo, which corresponds to an increase in value of 48%. With this evolution, tomatoes became the product with the highest accumulated increase since the beginning of the year in the basic food basket monitored by the consumer protection association.

Food basket reaches new maximum again

Price pressure is not limited to this product. The basic basket made up of 63 essential items, which DECO PROteste has been monitoring regularly since January 2022, once again reached a new record value.

Last week, the total cost of the basket rose another 60 cents, equivalent to 0.24%, costing R$254.99. This is a new record in this follow-up.

Since the beginning of 2026, the accumulated increase has already reached 13.17 euros, which represents an increase of 5.45% in a few months, according to the same source.

Difference compared to 2022 continues to increase

Comparison with the value recorded at the beginning of monitoring clearly shows the extent of the worsening. In 2022, the same basket would cost 67.29 euros less than it currently costs. In percentage terms, this translates into a difference of almost 36%, reflecting the continued impact of inflation on the food products most sought after by consumers.
