
Head-on collision, three cars involved in a serious accident on IC1. One person was left with serious injuries. Traffic cut off.
Four people died this Friday in a road collision which involved three cars in Complementary Itinerary 1 (IC1), in the municipality of Santiago do Cacemdistrict of Setúbal, said Civil Protection.
The Republican National Guard (GNR) revealed that it was a frontal collision between two vehicles. The driver of the third vehicle involved made a maneuver in time to escape the head-on collision.
All occupants of one of the cars died. All the deceased were Germans, belonged to the same family: the parents were 49 and 50 years old, the children were just 12 and 15 years old.
In addition to the four fatalities, the accident also caused a seriously injured (Portuguese, 69 years old), who, however, was transported in a helicopter from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) to the Hospital de Santa Maria, in Lisbon. Then he went to São José Hospital.
The source from the Alentejo Litoral Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command told Lusa that the accident led to the cut off traffic in the area of the collision, at kilometer 638.200 of IC1, in the Alvalade do Sado area.
An alert was given at 3:10 p.m., he added.
The relief operations mobilized a total of 33 firefighters from Alvalade do Sado, Ourique and Aljustrel, INEM and GNR, supported by 12 vehicles and the helicopter.
Only on the first two days (Thursday and Friday) of Operation Easter 2026, the Military Police already registered 8 dead on Portuguese roads.
