Germany’s serious decision: The European Union should abandon… THIS would change everything!

The European Union should abandon the principle of unanimity, which it applies in most cases of the decision-making process. This was stated by the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Johann Wadephul, in an interview with the media group Funke Media Group. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency.

  • German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul calls for the abolition of the principle of unanimity in the Union.
  • He cites a dispute with Hungary over a European loan for Ukraine as the reason.

Wadephul specifically pointed to the dispute with Hungary regarding the loan to Ukraine. “We should abolish the principle of unanimity in the EU in foreign and security policy before the end of the current legislative period, in order to be better able to act at the international level and to be truly mature,” stated.

The next elections to the European Parliament should take place in 2029. The German Foreign Minister clarified that he supports the election by a qualified majority in the Council of the EU. “All the experience we have gained in recent weeks with aid to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia suggests that,” he added.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán claims that Budapest is blocking a loan to Ukraine for allegedly obstructing the supply of Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia via the Druzhba pipeline. According to Ukraine, the reason for this is the Russian attack on the oil pipeline facility in the city of Brody in the Lviv region.

Parliamentary elections await Hungary on April 12. Wadephul said in this regard that it is up to Hungarian citizens to choose their future representatives and that Germany will cooperate with any Hungarian government.
