No fine: drivers can pass on Via Verde without Via Verde (under one condition)

Many Portuguese drivers may not know, but it is possible to avoid fines for unpaid Via Verde tickets — as long as they regularize the situation within the stipulated deadline.

Whenever a vehicle passes on an automatic lane without a valid identifier, or when there is a failure in the debit associated with Via Verde, the system records the license plate and generates a toll debt. But this does not mean that an infraction is issued immediately, reminds the portal.

Before any fine process there is a period in which payment can be made voluntarily. To do this, drivers can use the toll payment system, where it is possible to check outstanding amounts and pay them online, without the need to go to a physical store or contact the operator directly.

To verify, simply enter the vehicle registration number, approximate date of passage, full name, taxpayer number and address. The system then provides an Multibanco reference for payment.

But debts do not appear on the portal immediately. As a general rule, they are only visible 48 hours after passage. And in some cases, the period may be longer and reach 15 days, depending on the highway in question.

The portal is mainly used for Brisa roads, while highways operated by concessionaires such as Ascendi, Via Livre or Globalvia have their own consultation and payment systems. If the ticket does not appear on the main website, the driver must confirm which concessionaire is responsible for the route on which he/she traveled and look for the respective portal.

Anyone who does not pay off the debt voluntarily risks receiving a postal notification with increased administrative costs. If payment continues without being made, the case may progress to tax enforcement.
