Midfielder Oscar announced this Saturday (4) his retirement from football at the age of 34. In a video released by São Paulo, he regretted not being able to do more for the club.
“I wanted to do more for São Paulo, I wanted to play more. I think I had both football and the age to play more, but unfortunately that happened,” he said.
The player has been sidelined since November 2025, when he fell ill during a stress test at CT da Barra Funda. Taken to Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, he was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope — fainting that occurs due to a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate. Admitted to the ICU, he underwent a surgical procedure.
“My heart stopped for two and a half minutes, it was a shock. Today I’m better able to talk about it. My blood pressure was dropping, my heart was stopping, then they did a cardiac massage”, he reported.
After what happened, Oscar began to consider retirement. Since returning to the Tricolor team in 2025, the midfielder began to live with a series of injuries and showed signs of heart problems.
Developed by São Paulo, he had spells at Internacional, Chelsea and Shanghai. He accumulated titles such as the Premier League, Europa League, Confederations Cup and Brazilian Championship.
For the Brazilian national team, he was remembered for scoring Brazil’s only goal in the 7-1 defeat to Germany, in the semi-final of the 2014 World Cup. In his 18-year professional career, he played 601 games and scored 147 goals.
On Friday (3), Oscar followed the main squad’s training and received a tribute when he said goodbye.
“I’m finishing here at São Paulo a career that spanned the world. Now I’m going to retire and continue supporting São Paulo, continue my life as a fan,” he said in the video.
