NASA reveals unprecedented images of the Moon recorded by Artemis II astronauts

NASA announced, this Sunday (5), historical records made by Artemis II mission astronautswho observed the lunar surface from under perspectives never before reached by human eyes. The Orion spacecraft is already two-thirds of the way there, positioning itself about 321 thousand kilometers from Earth ea 132 thousand kilometers from your destination.

Among the images captured by the crew, the Orientale crater stands out. Although already mapped by robotic probes, this is the first time that the immense formation — compared to the “Grand Canyon” on the Moon — is seen directly by a manned team.

Records and lunar influence

The mission is about to reach a crucial milestone: entry into “lunar sphere of influence”at which point the satellite’s gravity becomes the predominant force on the capsule. If the trajectory is maintained, astronauts Christina Koch, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Jeremy Hansen will beat the record for greatest distance from Earth already achieved by humans.

Unlike the Apollo missions, which orbited just 110 kilometers from the surface, Artemis 2 will 6,400 kilometers of altitude. This strategic distance allows for a full view of the lunar curvatureincluding the far side and polar regions, described by astronaut Christina Koch as “absolutely spectacular.”

Life on board and technology

Despite the technical rigor of the mission, the astronauts’ routine mixes science e moments of relaxation:

New tools: For the first time, the agency authorized the smartphone use for photographic records in space, facilitating the capture of details of the surface and the Earth;

Team Morale: Commander Reid Wiseman reported that morale remains high. The crew started the day by pop music sound and had the opportunity to chat with family members via video;

The future on the Moon

Artemis 2 is the pillar of a long-term strategy that aims not only at return, but at human permanence. The ultimate goal is establish a fixed base on the lunar surfaceserving as a platform for future explorations of the solar system and transforming the ancient dream of flying through space into a constant presence of humanity beyond Earth.
