In the next round, João faces Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech (27th), who eliminated Russian Karen Khachanov (15th).

After starting the season having to deal with physical problems that compromised his performance, the Brazilian managed to achieve good results playing in the United States.

At the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, he advanced to the round of 16, stopping only against the Italian Jannik Sinner, second in the ranking.
