RIO DE JANEIRO, April 9 (Reuters) – The government will appeal the preliminary decision that suspended the oil export tax for some companies, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, told Reuters on Thursday.
“Naturally, we will appeal this decision, and the appeal will be presented by the AGU (Attorney General of the Union) soon”, he stated.
The Federal Court in Rio de Janeiro granted an injunction that suspends the effects of the oil export tax for the oil companies Shell, TotalEnergies, Equinor, Petrogal and Repsol Sinopec, which filed the lawsuit, according to a decision seen by Reuters the day before.
The decision, dated Tuesday, suspends the effects of the tax on companies since its creation on March 12.
The tax, at a rate of 12%, was imposed as a provisional measure by the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as part of a package of measures that aims to mitigate the impacts of a spike in international oil and fuel prices for Brazilian consumers due to the war in the Middle East.
