Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday announced that Israel would begin direct peace talks with Lebanon “as soon as possible”.. According to his statement tasked the cabinet with starting a dialogue in response to repeated calls from Beirutreports TASR based on reports from The Times of Israel (TOI) portal and the AP and AFP agencies.
“In view of Lebanon’s repeated requests to start direct negotiations with Israel, I instructed the government yesterday (Wednesday) to start direct negotiations with Lebanon as soon as possible,” the Israeli Prime Minister’s office said in a statement. According to her, the negotiations will focus on disarming the Hezbollah movement and establishing peaceful relations between the two countries.
Israel welcomed Thursday’s order by the Lebanese governmentaccording to which he is in Beirut possession of weapons is legal only in the hands of state institutions. The move followed a day after massive Israeli attacks in Lebanon killed and injured hundreds of people.
