First outbreak of “civil war” observed among chimpanzees


As part of a study that has been ongoing for decades, researchers have documented a “civil war” among wild chimpanzees for the first time. The team observed how the largest chimpanzee community known to date split into two camps, which then began to fight each other. The detailed reconstruction of this escalation in the specialist journal Science could shed light on how wars arise in humans – and how they can be avoided.
