USP will grant title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Vladimir Herzog

The journalist and former university professor was killed while imprisoned in Doi-Codi in 1975

Rector of USP said that granting the title to Vladimir Herzog is ‘historical reparation’

The rector of University of São Paulo (USP), Aluisio Augusto Cotrim Segurado, confirmed on Tuesday (7) that Vladimir Herzog will receive the in memory of the Doctor of Honor. The journalist was a professor at the institution’s Department of Journalism and Publishing.

In a letter sent to the journalist’s son, Ivo Herzog, the dean of USP said that the granting of the title is a “gesture of historical reparation” and “one tribute to a teacher whose career was interrupted by the dictatorship“It is also a recognition to his work as a journalist and communicator, as well as his commitment to public communication, freedom of expression and the defense of human rights”, wrote Segurado.

The USP University Council approved the honor in February, but it is still there is no date for the ceremony.

In 1975, the journalist was dead in a cell of the premises of the Internal Defense Operations Center (formerly Two-Codes). At the time, the repression body of the Military Regime forged the death certificate by Vladimir Herzog.

The journalist was born in 1937, in Osijek, former Yugoslavia, now Croatia. He would naturalized Brazilian and began his career as a journalist in 1959.

When he was arrested, Vladimir Herzog directed journalism at TV Culturaafter having passed through the newspaper’s editorial offices The State of S. Paulofrom the magazine Vision, and from BBCin London. The journalist was also a television journalism professor at the Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP).
