The towels we use every day can become a habitat for dangerous bacteria and microorganisms. Research from Japan has shown that towels left unwashed for 60 days contain huge amounts of bacteria that are resistant even to washing. Are you wondering how to wash towels to make them really clean and safe? Discover simple methods that will keep them fresh and hygienic!
Scientists have indicated that such towels may be dangerous to our health. Check if you’re not doing it yourself
Much has been written about it. Experts repeat that towels should be changed and washed regularly. This is the only way to keep them clean and hygienic.
Due to their use, towels can become a habitat for bacteria and microorganisms. Moisture, contact with the skin, and even cosmetic remnants and bacteria from the toilet create a microclimate on the surface of towels that favors the multiplication of germs. Recent research from Japan has shown that if left unchanged and unwashed for over 60 days, they become a ticking time bomb. Specialists examined towels from 26 households. The focus was on body towels. It turned out that from week to week the number of bacteria growing in fabrics was constantly increasing. It is estimated that after about 60 days, an ordinary towel can contain up to 164,000. bacteria per square centimeter. The mixture of sweat, epidermis, cosmetics and water creates ideal conditions for the multiplication of bacteria and microorganisms. Scientists emphasized that such large colonies of bacteria create structures on the surface of towels that are resistant even to washing. This means that in the case of towels used for more than 60 days, even modern detergents may be ineffective.
How to wash towels to keep them clean and hygienic?
To do this, wash them at high temperature, preferably at 60 degrees Celsius, using an appropriate amount of detergent. It is important not to overload the washing machine, which will allow it to rinse freely and remove any dirt. When washing towels, it is worth adding half a glass of vinegar, which will soften the fabrics and remove soap remnants, and also has an antibacterial effect. Avoid using fabric softeners as they can reduce the absorbency of the towels and leave residue on them. After washing, towels should be dried thoroughly, preferably outdoors or in a tumble dryer, to prevent the development of mold and unpleasant odors. Washing your towels regularly every 3-4 days will keep them fresh and hygienic.
To obtain maximum freshness and fluffiness of towels, experts recommend soaking them for about 30 minutes in water with baking soda (about half a glass in a large bowl of water) before washing. This will help remove soap and softener buildup from fabrics that can make towels feel rough and less absorbent. After soaking, the towels should be washed as usual.
