When Pope Leo XIV lands in the Algerian capital Algiers next Monday, it will be a first for both the country and the Catholic Church: a pope has never visited the North African country before. For Leo XIV himself, however, it will be the third time he has paid a visit to Algeria. The country is the cradle of the Augustinian order, to which the 70-year-old American, whose real name is Robert Francis Prevost, belongs and which he led for many years.
