MEC offers free app with 8 thousand books

The MEC (Ministry of Education) made the MEC Books application available for download on Monday (April 6, 2026), with almost 8,000 literary works available to read for free.

With this, we will strengthen reading and bring literature to all Brazilian people”, said President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) on social media.

The application works like an online public library, with loans of authorial books, such as new releases and best sellers. Works in the public domain will also be made available for download in ePub format.

There are works by great Brazilian writers, such as Clarice Lispector and Ariano Suassuna, and foreign writers, such as José Saramago and Gabriel García Márquez.

In addition to reading, the application also offers complementary user experiences, such as personalization, with font and contrast adjustment options, the use of game elements in reading and even automated notifications. Doubts can also be consulted with an artificial intelligence agent.

The application is on computers and also has integration with the portal.

Languages

When announcing the launch of the application, President Lula anticipated that the MEC Idiomas application will also be launched soon, offering 800 classes in English and Spanish, for bilingual learning in a self-instructional format.

With the new tool, students will be able to go through six levels of language learning, from basic to advanced. In this case, experiences will be improved with the support of the artificial intelligence agent for conversation practice, proficiency testing, notifications and tutoring.

The objective is to be the first digital point of contact between beginner language students and the language of their choice, accompanying their learning to more advanced levels”, informed the MEC, in a note.

According to the MEC, the initiative will require investments of R$1.68 million per year and could reach 16 thousand students per semester.
