Ursula von der Leyen welcomes the defeat of Viktor Orbán and talks about the stronger heart of Europe in Hungary. The result of the election can fundamentally change relations in the Union.
European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s defeat in parliamentary elections on Sunday, saying on Platform X that “the heart of Europe beats stronger in Hungary tonight”. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
Orbán, who described himself as a “thorn in the side” of the EU, was in constant disputes with most of the other members of the community, especially in matters of foreign policy and the rule of law, the French agency recalls.
The opposition triumphs
Based on the partial results of Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Hungary, TISZA Péter’s opposition party won 138 out of a possible 199 seats after counting more than 72 percent of the votes, while Fidesz currently has 54 seats and the ultra-right movement Our Homeland (Mi Hazánk Mozgalom) has seven seats so far, the 24.hu server writes.
In the meantime, French President Emmanuel Macron also congratulated Péter Magyar on his success in the elections. “France welcomes the victory of democratic participation, the commitment of the Hungarian people to the values of the European Union and Hungary in Europe. Together we will make Europe more sovereign, ensure the security of our continent, our competitiveness and our democracy,” Macron wrote on the X platform.
