For generations, it has been used as a natural helper for colds, coughs and other problems that come with the changeable spring weather.
St. John’s wort is one of the natural treasures that is definitely worth including in your home first aid kit. Watch the video to find out what its health effects are:
A herb that helps to breathe
The podběl is known primarily for its effects on the respiratory tract. Loosens phlegm and facilitates coughingwhich you will appreciate when you have a cold or inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. That is why people have long been preparing it in the form of tea, which warms and at the same time brings relief.
In addition to cough, it is also used for other problems. It has anti-inflammatory effects and can support the body in case of minor inflammations or mucous membrane irritation. Some people also rely on it for stomach problems or loss of appetite, when it gently supports digestion.
Interestingly, the effects of subwhite are not limited to internal use. A decoction of the leaves can also be used externally, for example on poorly healing wounds, eczema or irritated skin. It is this versatility that makes it an herb worth knowing.
Where to find it and how to collect it
Buckthorn grows in places where you might not expect it. You can find it along roads, on the edges of meadows and forests, or in drier and less fertile habitats. Once you know it, it’s easy to remember: its yellow flowers without leaves and later leaves with a whitish underside are typical.
And remember that both flowers and leaves are collected, but each in a different season. Flowers early in spring in dry weather, leaves later in late spring and summer. Drying is important, which should be quick and gentle so that the herb retains its properties. And a simple rule always applies, don’t take everything and leave something to nature.
A tradition worth remembering
You won’t normally find podběl in pharmacies these days, the more so the word comes back to its home collection. Our grandmothers always had it on hand and they knew why. Although it is necessary to use it wisely and not to overdo it with the length of use, its place remains. All you have to do is look around and rediscover what was here long before us.
