The pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic () reinforced negotiations to form an electoral alliance with the center and is close to concluding the support of , formed by and by .
The presidents of the two acronyms told the Sheet that membership only depends on the senator restricting the space for radical Bolsonarism in his campaign, maintaining a discourse of moderation that he has been adopting since he launched his pre-campaign — na .
“Today, it only depends on Flávio. If he continues to be a balanced person, speaking to the center, for Brazil to turn the page on this dispute, he will have our support. If he becomes an extreme right-wing candidate, which I don’t think will happen, [ele não terá]… He has everything to receive our support”, stated the president of the PP, the senator (PI).
The president of União Brasil, the lawyer, follows the same line. “This is the trend. If Flávio is a name to unite Brazil, we will not have any difficulties”, stated the party leader.
The demand for a speech aimed at the center reflects a well-known struggle for space on the right, in which parties in the center seek to expand their influence, with less power for more radical names in Bolsonarism.
According to interlocutors from the Progressive Union Federation, conversations between leaders have taken place frequently. There is even dialogue for agreements on candidacies in most states.
The expectation is that the alliance should be formalized by the end of May. This is the time needed for party leaders to resolve remaining impasses in the states, measure the moderation of Flávio’s speech and, most importantly, his prospect of victory.
Allies believe that the alliance will be natural if the senator continues to grow in the polls. There is enthusiasm with this Saturday (11), in which he appears numerically ahead of (PT) in a second round simulation.
The assessment is that, given the expectation of victory, the parties will naturally get closer. The prospect of power, say politicians, will make these parties want to support him sooner, in an attempt to guarantee better space in an eventual government.
The senator has adopted a different tone than his father. He has been restrained in his religious and anti-minority speeches, he has been sequential and has avoided getting into controversies. This stance has facilitated its movement through different party groups.
So far, Flávio has not attracted the support of parties in the so-called centrão. A formal alliance with these acronyms is considered valuable because it counts towards .
According to a calculation by political scientist Henrique Cardoso Oliveira, from the 1º de Maio Foundation, President Lula came out ahead in this regard, having sent the support of the PSOL-Rede federation, in addition to the PSB and PDT. The PT member would have 46% of the electoral propaganda time, while Flávio would have 37% if he only had the PL. () has 17%.
If he gets the support of União Brasil and PP, Flávio could even double his radio and TV time. The official division will still be made by the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), but 90% is according to the size of the acronyms in the Chamber, while 10% is divided equally.
In addition to TV time, an alliance with the União Progressista federation would give Flávio more reach, mainly in the North, Central-West and Southeast, where the acronyms have consolidated electoral bases. The two parties have a total of 98 deputies.
Meanwhile, Flávio finds it difficult to dialogue with the other two major acronyms that make up the so-called centrão, a group that fluctuates between governments regardless of the ideological position of the current president.
Flávio with the president of the Republicans, the deputy (SP). The conversation, however, was not positive. There are edges between the parties, and the tendency today is for the party to remain neutral in the election, without declaring support for any candidate in the first round.
In the PSD, Flávio was also unsuccessful. He tried to convince the former governor of Goiás Ronaldo Caiado to abandon his candidacy, when he was still in União Brasil, but without success. When the Goiano man migrated to the PSD, they talked again, but an eventual alliance was left for a possible 2nd round against Lula.
