The governor of , (), this Tuesday (14) reappointed Paulo Sérgio de Oliveira e Costa to the position of . Costa had been in the role since 2024 and was appointed after.
The process of choosing the name for the position that heads the MP-SP (of the State of São Paulo) ended on Saturday (11), after drawing up a list with two names. In addition to the one chosen by Tarcísio, members of the São Paulo body sent the name of Marco Antonio Ferreira Lima to the governor.
The election was electronic and remote. A total of 2,001 votes were cast, of which 1,305 went to Costa and 456 to Lima. As a rule, voting is mandatory for active members of the body. The participation rate in this year’s process was 96.9%.
Despite leading the last election, Costa was third in the triple list from which he was chosen in 2024. Attorneys José Carlos Cosenzo and Antonio Carlos da Ponte were, respectively, first and second placed. Unlike what happens when choosing the head of the (Attorney General’s Office), the state function must be chosen from these lists.
The attorney general said he accepted the reappointment, which was already expected, with an “immense sense of responsibility”. According to him, there is “a lot of work to do”, and the MP-SP “will continue to fulfill its role in combating crime and defending citizens, especially those from the most vulnerable groups”.
He began his career as a public prosecutor in São Paulo in 1986. He presided, for just under a year, over the now defunct Febem (today, Fundação Casa) from 2003 to 2004, during the administration of the former governor (). Costa was also the head of the Social Development portfolio at São Paulo City Hall during the administration of ().
Another public figure who has served as MP in São Paulo, a period leading the institution for juvenile offenders and a position in the municipal management of Kassab, is the current minister of the (Supreme Federal Court), who began his career as a prosecutor.
The now magistrate was honored during Costa’s administration with the Collar of Institutional Merit from the College of Attorneys of Justice. “The Public Ministry will always be your home and we are grateful for the way you represent our institution”, he told his former colleague at the time of the award.
In the campaign material aimed at members of the Public Ministry, Costa mentions the agency’s actions in the face of recent changes in the regulation of compensation amounts paid above the constitutional ceiling – the penduricalhos.
“Even during the campaign, we maintained a firm stance on the most sensitive topics of our career. In Brasília, we closely followed the discussions on the maturity issue, the STF judgment and the developments in the CNMP, always with transparency and responsibility”, says the prosecutor in a post on social media.
The STF issued a decision that established a comprehensive list of benefits and established a limit of 70% of the ceiling value of R$46,300 for penduricalhos. Subsequently, the CNMP and the CNMP regulated the judgment, but, for that, .
In addition to the increase in the budget for the agency from 2024, Costa also celebrated the financial supplement obtained from the state government. This relocation consists of the payment of amounts that are above the portions of the budget previously approved by the Legislature.
