The Avenida João XXI tunnel, in Lisbon, will close this Tuesday for security reinforcement works, which should last two years, indicated the Lisbon Mobility and Parking Company (EMEL).
In a statement, EMEL reported last week that the works intend to make that infrastructure more secure, improve fire protection and promote a safer mobility for everyone. According to the company, work on the tunnel is expected to last 720 days (close to two years).
This rehabilitation, which represents an investment of 7.6 million euros (including VAT), was unanimously approved at a City Council meeting in 2021 and awarded in 2022, but it will only start now.
According to the document approved in 2021, all tunnel infrastructure will be rehabilitated (HVAC, water, fire, wastewater and rainwater drainage networks), the area that includes the control post, the generator set room, the transformation station and the emergency exit on Avenida de Roma.
It is also planned to creation of a new emergency exit at the intersection of Avenida João XXI and Avenida de Roma”.
Opened in 1997, the Avenida João XXI tunnel connects Campo Pequeno to Avenida Afonso Costa, in Areeiro, with an approximate length of 1,490 meters.
