Aécio invites Ciro Gomes to run for President for the PSDB – 04/14/2026 – Politics

The federal deputy, national president of , invited this Tuesday (14) (PSDB-CE) to be the party’s candidate for president in October.

At the opening of the PSDB national meeting, held in , Aécio made the proposal to Ciro, who has been with the PSDB since October. Thirty-six years ago, Ciro was the first governor elected by the then newly created party, in Ceará. The PSDB dates back to 1988.

For Aécio, the election is far from being defined. For him, the country may need “almost a new Real Plan” to update itself in relation to changes in the areas of work, economy and development — among others. The situation led him to invite Ciro, after speaking with Marconi Perillo and other toucans.

“Today I cannot find someone in the national political picture with so many qualifications, so updated in relation to the Brazilian reality and with so much contribution to make to Brazil”, said Aécio about Ciro Gomes.

After the invitation, Ciro promised to develop the idea “with great respect”. “My anguish with Brazil does not allow me to simply dismiss [a candidatura à Presidência]and my respect and my duties towards Ceará also do not allow me to readily accept the challenge”, he said.

When questioned, he did not give a deadline for deciding on the invitation. As he does not hold any public office at the moment, he does not need to be incompatible to run for office. To do this, the PSDB simply needs to register its name with the Electoral Court by August 15th.

The PSDB hopes to run for seven state governments in 2026. Despite this, the party should not have names in historically important places for acronyms, such as São Paulo. Aécio admitted that the current situation “is still not enough for the responsibility” that the party believes it has in the country’s political scenario.

Ciro is 68 years old. Current president of the PSDB in Ceará, he was among the founders of the party and later went by acronyms such as PSB and PPS. In the last presidential race, he ran for and came in fourth place. It was his fourth unsuccessful candidacy for the Planalto.

Ciro’s articulations in Ceará involved getting closer to . A pre-candidate for the state government, he sought the support of the former president’s party for the venture, but became the target of criticism from the former first lady, who supports Eduardo Girão (Novo) for the position.
