To close the news of the public media, until now at the service of the ultranationalist Viktor Orbánto say to the face of the president of Hungary, Tamás Sulyokwho if he does not resign, will fire him, since he is not worthy of holding the position: that is how categorical the winner of the Hungarian elections, the conservative, has been. Péter Hungarianjust three days after his victory at the polls.

“One of my first measures, as soon as I form the government, will be to suspend the news of this propaganda medium,” said the party leader. Tiszabefore a stunned journalist from the M1 channel, after remembering that they had not wanted to interview him throughout the electoral campaign, despite being the favorite to win the elections. FideszOrbán’s party, has so far controlled 90% of the country’s media landscape and strangled the few existing critical media outlets with the “gag law.” Public media have functioned “as in the times of (Joseph) Goebbels or in North Korea”said Magyar, alluding to who was Adolf Hitler’s Propaganda Minister and the current Kim Jong-un regime.

Magyar also did not mince his words in his first meeting after the elections with Sulyok, who was elected to this position in 2024 by the Parliament, dominated by Orbán’s Fidesz. “He is not worthy of representing the Hungarian nation nor is he capable of guaranteeing respect for the rule of law,” he said as he left the presidential palace. Sulyok had received him formally and commissioned him to form the next Government.

viral encounter

Together with the president, Magyar toured the palace, which gave rise to a remote ‘meeting’ with Orbán. In images that have quickly gone viral, the president is seen showing the future prime minister the terraces of the palace, when the outgoing prime minister appears on another of the balconies. Magyar responds to this fortuitous situation by jovially saying that “this is like going to the cinema”, pointing to Orbán.

Already outside the presidential headquarters, the future prime minister assured that he had urged the head of state to resign. Magyar had promised in the campaign both to seek the president’s replacement, if he won the elections, and to suspend the information services that he considers to be at the service of Orbán’s apparatus. But it has surprised the forcefulness with which he expressed it after his victory and from what has been the “territory” of the outgoing prime minister.

Everything points to one lightning transition. The final results of the elections will be known next weekend, once the external vote has been computed. No major changes are expected in the distribution of seats in the new Parliament, where Tisza will have a two-thirds majority. Sulyok has announced that he will convene the new Parliament at the beginning of May.

Magyar has already contacted the European Commission to accelerate the reforms that allow it to unlock the European funds frozen to Hungary, some 18 billion euros, due to Orbán’s attacks on the rule of law. Budapest is expected to unlock the 90 billion euros in loans destined for Ukraine.
