Jet2.com plane declares emergency and lands safely in Faro

A plane from the British airline Jet2.com with 141 passengers and originating in the United Kingdom landed safely in Faro this Thursday due to technical problems, a Civil Protection source told Lusa.

According to the Algarve Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command, the plane, a Boeing 737-800, departed from Bournemouth, in the United Kingdom, and was destined for Gran Canaria, in Spain, with the crew reporting “smoke in the cabin”.

Speaking to the Lusa agency, a source from ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal told Lusa that the “technical emergency” was declared by the pilots and minutes later the aircraft landed safely, at 12:24 pm, at Gago Coutinho International Airport, in Faro.

The passengers were disembarked so that the aircraft could be technically checked, the Portuguese airport management entity also revealed.

The emergency triggered the airport’s Prior Intervention Plan, which, according to the established protocol, mobilizes several Civil Protection entities.

Among the actions planned for cases of emergency landing are the prior placement of teams that allow a quick emergency response in the event of incidents during the contact and arrival of the aircraft on land, in addition to the security of road corridors for the circulation of emergency vehicles.

95 elements were involved in the operation, supported by 41 vehicles, including firefighters, police and medical services.
