
José Luís Tinoco
Composer, visual artist and architect José Luís Tinoco died on Wednesday night in Lisbon. He was 93 years old.
He died the creator of songs such as “No Te Poem”, “Um Homem na Cidade” and “Madrugada”.
José Luís Tinoco He was also a pianist and jazz musician who was part of the first formations of the Hot Clube de Portugal, the poet who published “Perseguição dos dias”, the composer that Bernardo Sassetti, João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Mário Laginha, Ivan Lins, Carlos do Carmo addressed repeatedly, and whose music has “the quality of the great ‘standards’”, as his interpreters recognize, at a level comparable to Cole Porter or Tom Jobim.
His brand, however, is not limited to music. It extends to architecture, illustration, cartoons, photoanimation, costumes and sets for theater, opera and ballet, design and graphic arts.
A true variety artist
In 2014, José Luís Tinoco received the Career Consecration Award from the Portuguese Society of Authors, and Teatro S. Luiz, in Lisbon, opened the season with the tribute show “Os lados do mar – José Luís Tinoco”, directed by Laurent Filipe, with the participation of musicians such as Carlos do Carmo, Carminho, Camané, André Sarbib and Pedro Jóia.
In 2021, RTP premiered the documentary, by Laurent Filipe, available on the RTP Play platform, which covers the different expressions of his work.
