Iran classifies new US sanctions threat as “economic terrorism”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has denounced the US Treasury Department’s threat to intensify sanctions against Tehran as “economic terrorism”.

The policies “are nothing less than economic terrorism and state-sponsored extortion – actions that constitute crimes against humanity and, in their cumulative effect, constitute genocide,” said ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei on Thursday (16), in a post on X.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned during a White House press conference on Wednesday (15) that the US could impose a series of secondary sanctions against Iran.

“We are now willing to apply s, which is a very severe measure, and the Iranians should know that this will be the financial equivalent of what we saw in kinetic activities,” Bessent told reporters.

The sanctions would target companies and ships that the Treasury Department says export Iranian oil and natural gas, as well as countries that buy Iranian oil.
