The police said in a statement that the car went onto the curb and hit two pedestrians just before 5:00 p.m. local time (11:00 p.m. CEST) on Friday. One person died on the spot and another was taken to hospital in serious condition.
Australian television station 9News reported that the incident occurred near the Supanova comic fair, where thousands of visitors were present. Witnesses told television that the car rammed into a group of people at high speed.
The perpetrator was arrested on the spot and is being interrogated, the police announced, adding that “the circumstances of the accident are currently unclear and the investigation is ongoing.”
