Gentil, while heading the body in the face of Costa’s removal for the re-election campaign to the position of attorney general, appointed prosecutor Mirella Monteiro to occupy one of the three seats in Geduc. The seat had been vacant since January.

Mirella would take up a place at Geduc on Thursday (16). However, Costa, upon being reappointed as head of the Public Ministry on Tuesday, annulled the prosecutor’s appointment and appointed prosecutor Edi Lago.
Gentil said he chose Mirella for her personal merits and academic career focused on public education policies.
Another point in Mirella’s favor, according to Gentil, is that the previous vacancy belonged to a female prosecutor, and Geduc, which is made up of three members, already has two male prosecutors today.
“I appointed the prosecutor based on her personal merits, as she is a professional with an academic and public life focused on the right to education and public educational policies and with a visible vocation for the duties. Which, in this case, are to monitor the public provision of education, which is a universal right”, said Gentil.
Costa, in turn, defends Lago’s choice and says that Gentil disregarded the criteria because he was the oldest at the institution.
“This was the reason for the appointment of prosecutor Edi Lago to Geduc, an extremely respected colleague within the institution and with the necessary work capacity to help overcome the delay in service indicated by the National Council of the Public Ministry (CNMP)”, says a note, published by the body.
One wing, unhappy with the decision, lists appointments made by the attorney general himself to groups Combating Racial Crimes and Intolerance (Gecradi) and Property Persecution (Gaepp) without considering the seniority criterion.
The Panel questioned the Public Ministry about these appointments, but did not receive answers until the publication of this text.
