The number of victims of the mass shooting in Kyiv has risen to seven, and seven others, including a child, remain in hospital. The authorities are also dealing with the possible failure of police patrols.
The number of victims of Saturday’s shooting in Kyiv has increased to seven, after one of the men who was shot succumbed to his injuries. Referring to Kyiv Mayor Vitalij Klitschko, the Reuters agency and the Meduza news server reported on this on Monday, writes TASR.
“The victim was in critical condition. Doctors fought for her life, but unfortunately they were unable to save her,” said Klitschko. Seven injured people, including one child, are still hospitalized. Four of them are in the intensive care unit.
Intervention and investigation
The perpetrator of the attack was a 58-year-old man who, on Saturday, April 18, started shooting at passers-by in Kyiv’s Holosiiv district and then held hostages in a supermarket. The attacker was shot when the security forces intervened.
The prosecutor’s office began investigating this case on suspicion of committing a terrorist act. At the same time, the investigators are also checking the progress of the police patrols, who ran away from the scene of the incident during the shooting and left the injured without help. The Ukrainian police have not yet disclosed the motive for the shooting.
A rare incident
Reuters noted that such incidents are extremely rare in Ukraine. However, according to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, the attack in Kyiv raised questions about citizens’ right to self-defense, as well as how the attacker managed to obtain a permit to possess a weapon.
The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office said the perpetrator of the attack was born in Moscow. According to media findings, his name was Dmitry Vasilchenko, who had Ukrainian citizenship. The police specified that until 2005 he served in army logistics units in southern Ukraine’s Odesa region and since 2017 lived in the city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. It is not known when he moved to Kyiv.
