Iran announces seizure of ships trying to cross the Strait of Hormuz

Iranian authorities identified a ship as “MSC-FRANCESCA”, which they said belonged to “the Zionist regime”, in reference to Israel

The Revolutionary Guards, Iran’s ideological army, announced this Wednesday (22) that its naval force intercepted two ships trying to cross the Strait of Hormuz and led both into Islamic Republic territorial waters.

“The naval force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps identified and detained two violating ships this morning in the Strait of Hormuz,” the ideological army said in a statement.

“The two offending ships (…) were seized by the CGRI and taken to the Iranian coast”, adds the note.

Iranian authorities identified a ship as “MSC-FRANCESCA”, which they said belonged to “the Zionist regime”in reference to Israel, and the another as “EPAMINONDAS”, claiming that it “altered navigation systems and endangered maritime safety”.

The Revolutionary Guard issued a warning against any action contrary to the rules of the Islamic Republic in the Straits, “as well as against any activity that harms the safety of navigation” on this maritime route.

According to Tehran, ships must receive authorization to leave or enter the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, a route through which, in times of peace, 20% of world oil and gas exports, as well as other essential products, transit.
