According to the Civil Police, the suspect almost amputated one of the victim’s fingers while keeping her in private prison.
The Civil Police arrested in the early hours of this Friday (24), at Tom Jobim International Airport (Galeão), a man of Belgian nationality when he was trying to escape Brazil. He was suspected of extorting and torturing a Canadian tourist in an apartment in the center of Rio de Janeiro. The case is investigated by the Special Tourism Support Police Station (Deat).
According to investigations, the criminal kept the victim in prison for two days. “During this period, he demanded payment of 5,000 Canadian dollars – more than R$18,000 – and subjected the victim to extreme violence,” reported the Civil Police.
According to police, the Canadian also suffered constant threats and was subjected to a knife to torture himalmost amputating one of his fingers. The victim managed to escape and seek medical attention.
Even after the victim was hospitalized, the criminal continued to threaten and demand more money through messages, trying to continue with the extortion.
According to investigations, the victim was being coerced from Canada, where he had already paid 35 thousand Canadian dollars to the criminal – equivalent to more than R$128 thousand. It was also found that the author is a repeat offender and has a criminal history in Belgium.
With Deat monitoring, in conjunction with the Federal Police, the criminal was located and arrested in Galeão, while trying to embark for Colombia. He was charged with extortion and torture.
The identities of the suspect and victim have not been released.
