Iran’s head of diplomacy arrived in Islamabad for talks on regional peace and stability. At the same time, preparations for the arrival of the American delegation are already being finished in the city.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi arrived in the Pakistani capital Islamabad shortly before midnight local time on Friday. However, it is not yet clear whether he will also meet with the American delegation during the weekend, writes TASR according to reports from the AFP and AP agencies.
According to a statement from Pakistan’s foreign ministry, Arakhchi is expected to hold talks “with the leadership of Pakistan on the latest developments in the region as well as ongoing efforts for regional peace and stability.” The minister previously wrote on the X social network that the purpose of the visit is coordination with partners in bilateral matters.
American delegation on the way
Meanwhile, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the US delegation, made up of presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, is scheduled to depart the US for Pakistan on Saturday morning US time. It is unclear whether the two delegations will meet.
An unnamed Pakistani government source said earlier that a US logistics and security team was already in Islamabad to conduct a second round of talks between Washington and Tehran.
Trump extended the ceasefire
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday extended the two-week ceasefire in the war with Iran just before it was due to expire. According to him, the aim was to give Tehran more time to present a unified proposal for negotiations.
Citing anonymous Pakistani sources and Trump himself, The New York Times reported on Wednesday that the second round of US-Iranian talks could take place in the next three days.
