Psol congressmen sent a representation against the former governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (PSD), to the PGR (Attorney General’s Office), asking for the annulment of the , which is located in Minaçu (GO), for the .
The document is signed by the federal deputies (SP), (RJ) and (RS). They require the investigation of the operation and the adoption of measures to immediately cancel all acts related to this negotiation. This includes agreements, payments and contracts.
The representation also requests the opening of a civil and criminal investigation in order to observe the “facts that could pose a serious threat to Brazil’s economic sovereignty”.
The document calls for an analysis of the constitutionality of the Goiás government’s procedures “that may have favored the export of rare earths, in addition to the investigation of Caiado’s conduct due to possible extrapolation of constitutional powers”.
The deputies request that the PGR evaluate sending actions to the STF (Supreme Federal Court) to declare the nullity of the acts related to the operation in view of “possible invasion of Union competence in issues such as mining and international relations”.
Rare Earths
The purchase of the Brazilian company, which operates in rare earth mining, for US$2.8 billion was announced on April 20.
Serra Verde operates the Pela Ema mine, in Minaçu (GO), the only active ionic clay mine in Brazil, in production since 2024. It is also the only producer of the most valuable heavy rare earths outside Asia: Dysprosium (Dy), Terbium (Tb) and Yttrium (Y).
The materials are used to manufacture permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, robots, drones, and high-efficiency air conditioners, such as in the areas of semiconductors, defense, nuclear and aerospace.
According to the Brazilian mining company, the deal will enable the creation of the largest global company in the sector. Production in Goiás is in phase 1, but the intention is to double capacity by 2030.
