Three cancer patients die in Burgos hospital after medical error

Three cancer patients died at the University Hospital of Burgos, in Spain, after receiving an excessive dose of medication. The case is under investigation, and the most recent victim died this week.

According to the , the patient had been hospitalized in critical condition since Decemberwhen five cancer patients mistakenly received a dose approximately six times greater than that prescribed.

The first two fatalities died shortly after incorrectly administering the treatment. The other two patients managed to recover and have already been discharged from hospital.

O incident occurred on December 18in the hospital pharmacy, during the preparation of medicines. Failure to dilute one of the drugs will have resulted in the administration of a dose significantly higher than indicated.

O Public Ministry opened an investigation and has already filed charges for negligent homicide and offenses against physical integrity, considering that this is a case of “serious professional imprudence”.

The case was reported by the victims’ families and thePatient Advocate. The hospital opened an internal investigation and guarantees that the procedures were reviewedin order to prevent similar situations in the future.
