Agricultural fairs become right-wing territory in Brazil – 04/25/2026 – Politics

The main events in the country, which generate billions in sales of agricultural machinery annually, have consolidated themselves in recent years as the territory of politicians linked to the right, a scenario that is expected to be repeated in the coming days with two important agricultural fairs.

Agrishow (International Fair of Agricultural Technology in Action), which will be open to the public on Monday (27) in (313 km from ), and Expozebu, in Uberaba, in , have become notable in recent years for frequent visits by politicians opposing the government (PT), who in turn had timid participation in the events.

After receiving the former president () from 2018 to 2024 (except in the years of the pandemic, when there was no fair), Agrishow is expected to have a visit this year from his son (PL), a pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic.

Allies of the senator and the former president in the region and directors of two of the entities organizing the agricultural fair said that Flávio should participate in Agrishow on Monday, in the company of the governor of São Paulo, (Republicans).

The official opening of the fair will be this Sunday (26), without the public, restricted to authorities, sector entities and the press, repeating what happened in the last two years due to an imbroglio involving Bolsonaro and the Lula government — which did not attend the event during its current term.

In 2023, there was friction between the government and the Agrishow organization. Out of office after being defeated at the polls the previous year, Bolsonaro announced that he would be at the event — in his first public appearance upon returning from the three-month period he spent in the United States —, which led the organization to suggest to the then minister of , Carlos Fávaro (PSD), that he visit the fair on another day.

The federal government didn’t like it, threatening Agrishow’s main partner and the organization.

From the following year onwards, it took place again, but in advance, on the day before the opening of the gates, without public and restricted. This led Tarcísio to opt for his own “event” at Agrishow – in an IAC (Agronomic Institute of Campinas) building on the farm that hosts the party.

That same year, he criticized Lula, whom he called a “citizen who is in the palace”. Followed by ruralists, politicians and supporters, they got on machines and tractors and paraded through the fair, which happened again the following year, in the back of a truck.

In this last appearance, in 2024 (last year, he was hospitalized recovering from an illness), the former president said that, if he did not return to office, he would.

“Let’s move forward, we believe in you, we believe in Brazil and, if I don’t come back one day, don’t worry. We planted seeds throughout our four years,” Bolsonaro told the auditorium.

The Bolsonaro and Tarcísio family, however, are not the only right-wing nucleus to attend Agrishow. () and (Novo), former governors of Goiás and Minas Gerais, respectively, spoke last year at the event, which also hosted the governor of Paraná, Ratinho Junior (PSD), and the president of the same party, .

Meanwhile, Lula was represented in the 2024 and 2025 editions by vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), who participated in the inaugural act in the first year with Fávaro and Paulo Teixeira (then minister of Agrarian Development).

Flávio was also at another agricultural event this week, Norte Show, in (Mato Grosso), where he criticized the (Supreme Federal Court).

The scenario is no different from what happened in recent years in Uberaba, in the Triângulo Mineiro, at Expozebu, the main national livestock event.

They were at the fair in the city of Minas Gerais in 2024, organized by ABCZ (Brazilian Association of Zebu Breeders), before heading to Ribeirão for Agrishow.

Open to the public, but normally attended only by entities linked to the zebu breeds in the country, Expozebu saw the field filled to capacity in 2022 for a speech by Bolsonaro in which he called on allies to participate in that year.

The livestock exhibition will open in its 91st edition this Saturday (25) without the confirmed presence of Lula, Alckmin or ministers, and with the prospect of surpassing the R$200 million generated in business last year. Right-wing politicians are expected.

Other agricultural events also maintained in the current federal mandate what has practically become the rule, with a strong presence of members of the right, critical of the PT government.

Feicorte, in Presidente Prudente (SP), had Bolsonaro at the opening in 2025, who spoke and included an agenda from Tarcísio that practically became an act of retribution to the former president.

Tecnoshow, in Rio Verde (GO), which this year canceled the opening ceremony, is another fair that confirms the rejection of Lula’s name. In his first year of the current term, he opened the main agricultural fair in the Central-West.

Agrishow, the country’s main agricultural event, is in its 31st edition and will take place next week, from Monday to Friday (1st), on a farm on the banks of km 321 of the Antônio Duarte Nogueira highway, in Ribeirão Preto.

This year, the organization did not disclose an estimate of the business that could be generated by the 800 exhibitors. President of the fair, João Marchesan stated that the financial volume will be “a consequence of everything that will happen”.

In 2025, the fair broke a record for business intentions, reaching R$ 14.6 billion (R$ 15.2 billion, updated) and bringing together 197 thousand visitors — also the highest number since its first edition, in 1994.
