Nunes Marques assumes presidency of the TSE on May 12th

Minister will succeed Cármen Lúcia after a 2-year term; André Mendonça will be the vice

The Superior Electoral Court scheduled the inauguration of minister Nunes Marques as president of the Electoral Court for May 12th.

Nunes Marques will take command of the TSE after the end of the term of the current president, Minister Cármen Lúcia, who will complete a 2-year period as head of the court.

The president of the court is chosen based on seniority among the ministers who also make up the Federal Supreme Court. The vice-president will be minister André Mendonça.

Profile

Born in Teresina, Nunes Marques is 53 years old and was nominated to the Supreme Court, in 2020, by the former president (PL) to fill the vacancy left by minister Celso de Mello.

Before arriving at the Supreme Court, he served as a judge at the TRF (Federal Regional Court) of the 1st Region, based in Brasília.

He was a lawyer for around 15 years and judge at the TRE (Regional Electoral Court) of Piauí.

Composition

The TSE is made up of 7 ministers, 3 from the STF, two from the Superior Court of Justice and 2 lawyers appointed by the President of the Republic, in addition to their respective substitutes.
