PT wants to compare Lula and Bolsonaro, but president says that’s not enough

Party leaders defended showing the government’s achievements during the party’s 8th national congress

The president (PT) said, this Friday (April 24, 2026), that the government’s strategy for the election involves comparing its own legacy with that of its opponents. The statement was made in a video sent to the 8th PT National Congress, in Brasília.

“Whoever is in government has to have a great weapon to win the elections to show what they did”he stated. Then, the PT member said that the result will depend on the “ability to convince” of the electorate. This was Lula’s first appearance after undergoing 2 medical procedures in São Paulo. The national president of PT, endorsed this point of view. He said in his speech that it was necessary to establish a comparison between the governments of (PL) and Lula. “We have to compare the Brazil of reconstruction, of President Lula, with the Brazil of destruction, of the Bolsonaro family. This comparison needs to be made”he declared in his opening speech at the congress.

Edinho to stamp as “ultra-right” and “fascist” Bolsonarism, which has senator (PL) as a pre-candidate for Presidence in this year’s elections.

“Fascist leaders in Brazil have a name and a surname. And we have to tell the Brazilian people this at all times. This is our responsibility”these.

According to the PT leader, the election in 2026 “It’s not an electoral dispute, it’s a dispute about the future of Brazil”. Edinho also said that Lula found the country “broken” at the end of Jair Bolsonaro’s administration.

Paulo Okamotto told journalists at the event that the strategy involves “compare what we are doing with a proposal of what the other will do”. At the end of 2025, he left command of the Perseu Abramo Foundation, a political studies institute linked to the PT. Now, he is coordinator of popular committees and social media for Lula’s campaign.

He stated that the PT must highlight its actions and demand explanations from its opponents about its plans. When dealing with the electoral clash, he stated that the comparison must be based on history: “Let’s compare what this guy [Flávio Bolsonaro] done in 24 years with what we did”, in reference to the trajectory of the opponents.

According to him, however, the main focus should not be the direct attack, but the presentation of the project itself. “The most important thing is to talk about ourselves, what we are, what we want, what we think, what we are going to do”, he declared.

The 8th PT National Congress

The Workers’ Party is holding its 8th National Congress between this Friday (24th April) and Sunday (26th April), at Complexo Brasil 21, in Brasília. The event brings together around 600 representatives and discusses the political situation, electoral tactics for 2026 and Brazil’s role in the world. Read the (PDF – 99 kB) of the programming.

The opening started empty and the plenary only gained volume around 8pm. The low presence of young people was also noticed. Among those present were:

  • Edinho Silva (PT national president);
  • Jilmar Tatto (PT national vice-president and federal deputy for SP);
  • José Guimarães (PT leader in the Chamber of Deputies);
  • Humberto Costa (senator for PT-PE and 2nd vice-president of the Senate);
  • Zeca Dirceu (federal deputy for PT-PR);
  • Pedro Uczai (PT leader in the Chamber of Deputies and federal deputy for SC);
  • Geraldo Alckmin (Vice President of the Republic);
  • Paulo Okamotto (former president of the Perseu Abramo Foundation and one of the coordinators of Lula’s campaign);
  • Carlos Lupi (former Minister of Social Security and president of the PDT);
  • José Dirceu (former Minister of the Civil House);
  • Márcia Lopes (Minister of Women).

President Lula was not at the opening. He underwent two medical procedures at Hospital Sírio-Libanês, in São Paulo, and is expected to participate in the closing ceremony on Sunday.
