Buckingham Palace is reassessing King Charles III’s visit to Washington following the shooting attack at an event attended by United States President Donald Trump. “Several discussions will take place throughout the day to discuss with American colleagues and our respective teams the extent to which Saturday night’s events may or may not impact the operational planning of the visit.”, says the Palace statement.
Charles III would travel to the United States this Monday (27). According to the Palace, the monarch is “being kept fully informed about the developments” of the event and emphasizes that Charles was very relieved” to learn that President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania “and all the guests were unharmed”, added the note.
Invasion and attack
A dinner with journalists and correspondents from the White House on Saturday (25), in which the President of the United States, Donald Trump, was participating for the first time, was interrupted after a shooting attack.
The suspect, a 31-year-old man, was arrested. He was identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a California resident who was staying at the Washington Hiltonwhere the Correspondents Association event was held. Trump, in an interview after the chaos, classified him as “a sick person” and “a lone wolf”.
Allen, who was detained at the hotel yesterday, is receiving hospital treatment and should be formally charged on Monday (27). He will be charged with using a firearm during a violent crime and assaulting a federal agent using a dangerous weapon.
In addition to Trump, the vice president, JD Vance and the first lady, Melania Trump, were also removed from the scene by Secret Service agents. Loud bangs were heard and guests at the White House Correspondents’ Association gala dinner ran for cover under tables.
An attack on the president of the United States has already been recorded at the Washington Hilton. It was while leaving this same hotel, on March 30, 1981, that then-president Ronald Reagan was shot at.
